<![endif]-->UK-based Egyptian born mobile phone entrepreneur, Mo Ibrahim initiated a $5m prize for Africa’s most effective head of state that with the sole purpose of rating good governance in 53 African countries each year. The contest, launched in London a year ago, awards winning leaders $5m over 10 years when they leave office, plus $200,000 a year for life. According to Mo Ibrahim, “We need to remove corruption and improve governance".

You cannot fault the logic, but the jury is still out on whether the Mo Ibrahim Prize for African Leadership will persuade African leaders not to loot their economies of billions of dollars and instead invest them in social programs for their people.

At $5 million, the prize is the world’s richest, far exceeding the Nobel Peace Prize, which comes at $1.5 million. Both are however, dwarfed by the potential ill-gotten gains of looting the public coffers. Last week, former Botswana President Festus Mogae became the second recipient of the award for steering Botswana along a stable, prosperous path and leading the fight against AIDS. Mogae is regarded internationally as an exemplary African leader who ensured that the tenet of democracy flourished under his rule, making Botswana a rare political and economic success story on the continent.
It's a shame that as Africans we have to resolve to this extreme measure for guaranteed good governance, but again our case as Africans is different so it should be encourage if it makes the peoples life a bit better. |
